We are an independent, non-profit organization that aims to provide reliable information to those making decisions in healthcare.
Our vision is to ensure that everyone has access to scientific evidence, empowering them to make informed decisions about their health and the health of others. We are convinced that better decisions are made with accurate and up-to-date information.
To achieve our goal, we innovate in technologies and methodologies that enable us to identify and synthesize the best scientific evidence. This facilitates its utilization by health decision-makers, including: authorities, researchers, health professionals, regulatory agencies, and the general public.
We firmly believe that to effectively manage scientific evidence and provide it to those who need it in a timely and suitable format for decision-making, the integration of innovative technologies and methods, along with collaborative efforts, is essential.
Epistemonikos Foundation is built upon two pillars: excellence and independence.
Epistemonikos is a greek word coined by philosopher Aristotle, which means 'what is worth knowing'. The word 'episteme' comes from the Greek έπιστήμη (knowledge or science) and derives from the verb έπίσταμαι (to know), which is opposed to δοξα (belief or popular opinion). Over time, the word 'epistemonikos' was translated into Latin as scientia (science in English).
We chose this name because:
Another interpretation of the term 'epistemonikos' is 'the one who generates knowledge' which aligns perfectly with our organization's mission. We aim not only to generate knowledge ourselves but also to empower individuals with the capability to do so.
In evidence-based medicine, a fundamental principle is the existence of a hierarchy of evidence, where not all research types carry the same level of reliability. Some forms of research are more robust than others, emphasizing that not all information is equally valuable.
The Epistemonikos Foundation was created in tandem with the development of the Epistemonikos database, a multilingual repository of evidence. Consequently, we selected a name in Greek, as opposed to English or Spanish.

Collaboration is a core value at the Epistemonikos Foundation, and we incorporate it into all the tools and methods we develop. We partner with other organizations that share our mission to maximize the impact of our work.
